Individual therapy at CFC is a collaborative, relationship-centered process for adults seeking to understand themselves more deeply, work through difficult experiences, and create lasting change. Our therapists are guided by interpersonal neurobiology and draw from a range of evidence-based approaches tailored to each person.
Build a genuine, trusted relationship with a therapist who truly listens
Understand the root causes of recurring patterns, not just the symptoms
Develop tools for nervous system regulation and emotional resilience
Process past experiences that continue to shape the present
Create meaningful, lasting change from the inside out
Reaching out for support takes courage. Whatever brought you here, whether it’s a pattern you keep running into, a weight you’ve been carrying longer than you’d like to admit, or a feeling that something just isn’t right, we’re glad you’re here.
At the Center for Connection, individual therapy for adults is grounded in one foundational belief: the relationship between you and your therapist matters more than any technique. Research has shown that a strong therapeutic alliance is one of the best predictors of successful therapy. Before anything else, we work to understand you. Your history, your relationships, your nervous system, and the specific constellation of strengths and vulnerabilities that make you who you are.
For some people, therapy is about working through something specific: grief, a difficult relationship, a career transition, a trauma that hasn’t fully resolved. For others, it’s about understanding themselves more deeply, shifting long-standing patterns, or learning to regulate emotions that have felt overwhelming for years. Both are valid reasons to come. Both are what we do.
Key Insight
Individual therapy is a dedicated space to explore what’s happening inside you, with the support of a trained clinician who’s there to listen without judgment and help you make sense of your experience. Sessions are typically 50 minutes, held weekly or biweekly depending on your needs and goals.
Our work is guided by the framework of interpersonal neurobiology, the science of how brain, mind, and relationships shape who we are and how we change. This means we don’t just focus on your thoughts or behaviors in isolation. We look at the whole person: your body, your nervous system, your relational history, and the ways your past experiences continue to show up in the present.
Our therapists draw from a range of evidence-based approaches, including psychodynamic therapy, somatic interventions, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Which approach is most useful depends on you, your goals, and what emerges in the room together. We don’t apply a one-size-fits-all model. We follow you.
Many of our clients come in presenting one concern and discover, over time, that the work goes deeper. A pattern of anxiety turns out to be connected to early attachment experiences. Difficulty at work traces back to nervous system responses developed long before the current job. This isn’t surprising. People are complex. Our goal is not just to treat symptoms, but to peel back the layers and find the source, then offer experiences and interventions that create lasting change from the inside out.
How It Works
Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We’ll hear what brought you in, ask questions, and begin to understand the fuller picture of your life. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you come in. You just need to show up.
From there, we’ll work together to identify goals and a direction for your therapy. That direction may shift as we learn more. That’s normal. The process is collaborative, and you’re always part of deciding where we go.
You may notice changes within a few sessions, or it may take longer. Some of what changes in therapy is subtle at first: a moment of pausing before reacting, a slightly different way of speaking to yourself, a boundary you’re finally able to hold. Over time, these shifts compound.
Adults seek individual therapy at the Center for Connection for a wide range of reasons. Some of the most common include:
Anxiety, depression, or mood instability that interferes with daily life
Trauma or PTSD, including complex or developmental trauma
Relationship difficulties, including repeated patterns across partners or friendships
Grief and loss
Life transitions such as marriage, parenthood, divorce, or career change
Feeling disconnected from yourself, numb, or like you’re just going through the motions
Personal growth and deeper self-understanding
You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. You just need to want something different than what you have right now.
Individual therapy near you shouldn’t require a long search. We see adults at all three of our Southern California locations: Pasadena, Duarte, and Santa Barbara. Telehealth is also available for individuals throughout California who prefer virtual sessions or have scheduling constraints that make in-person visits difficult.
Our Pasadena location is our main hub, and it’s where many of our adult therapy clients begin. That said, we match you with the right therapist first, and then we figure out the logistics together. If a particular clinician is the right fit for you and they’re based at a different location, that conversation is worth having.
Good to Know
Our adult therapists hold graduate-level training in psychology, social work, and marriage and family therapy. Many have specialized training in trauma-informed care, somatic approaches, EMDR, and IPNB-informed practice. We are a genuinely interdisciplinary team, which means that when your individual therapy intersects with another area of care, such as occupational therapy, speech-language services, or family work, we can coordinate across our own team rather than asking you to build those bridges yourself.
Clients are matched with a therapist based on areas of specialty, relational fit, and availability. We take that matching process seriously because we know the relationship is the work.
